Mattress Layers
So what is the Koala mattress made of?
Underneath the cover, the mattress comprises of 2 layers.
The top (comfort layer) being Kloudcell.
One of the key features of this layer is it’s open-cell foam construction:
- It’s a 6cm layer

- Koala mattress technology of zero partner disturbance

The second layer is the mattresses Ecofoam support layer, this layer:

- Ensures the longevity of the mattress
The mattress is simply made of 2 pieces of foam which is quite underwhelming compared to others in the market.

Mattress Care Instructions
Koala Mattress Cleaning
The Koala mattress is not high maintenance.
The mattress cover can be removed by simply zipping it off.
Once removed, you can:
- Hand wash with cold soapy water
- Dry or spot clean it
- Air dry once done (must be completely dry before putting it back on)
The foam core can also be gently spot cleaned with water and mild soap.
Once complete, it’s best to let it air dry away from direct sunlight.
A big NO NO:
Do not place the foam in a dryer or washing machine.
Just don’t do it man
Can / Do You Flip A Koala Mattress?
The short answer is no.
The mattress comprises of 2 layers, the top comfort layer is 6cm whilst the bottom supportive (denser) layer is 22cm.
If you were to flip the mattress, you’d be sleeping on the supportive dense layer which wouldn’t be that comfortable.
You’d also damage the soft comfort layer if you flipped it.
However:
It’s recommended to rotate the Koala mattress one a month by 180 degrees.
Environmentally Friendly
The Koala mattress is a green product.
Their foams are GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia) certified.
Meaning they have gone above and beyond to ensure their product meets such rigorous standards and pass such an assessment. The GECA certificate is only awarded to products made to the highest environmental standards.
With almost zero emissions, the Koala mattress is made without and does not contain:
- Ozone-depleting substances (methylene chloride)
- Heavy metals (mercury and lead)
- Phthalates
Their mattress foam was examined across its complete production span and the production of the product was proven to be environmentally responsible and made ethically, having a lower impact on human health.

How Long Does A Koala Mattress Take To Inflate?
The mattress will begin to inflate within moments of unrolling it into place.
Koala Mattress Smell
Once unwrapped the mattress does have a chemical smell but this goes away after airing it out.

In saying so, it will take up to 3 - 5 days for the Koala mattress to return to its complete feel and shape.

Koala Mattress Review
The company has thousands of glowing online reviews.
You may have realised that the majority of these are from customers who have recently received their Koala mattress.
To get a balanced approach:
It’s important to consider reviews of customers who have had their mattress for a considerable amount of time.
Koala Mattress Good Reviews
Delivery
Generally delivery is quite good, with customers receiving their mattress quite quickly.
Minimal Partner Disturbance
Partners have noticed a reduction in partner disturbance throughout the night after sleeping on the Koala mattress.
Customer Service
Overall the rating of Koala’s customer service is good. They have reasonable response times. Whether it be for a purchase or refund, they assist customers in a friendly manner.
Koala Mattress Bad Reviews
Koala Mattress Sagging
Within 6 - 18 months customers noticed the Koala mattress sagging. In which deep body impressions/ indents started to set in.
As a result customers started to complain about body aches and pains after sleeping on the mattress.
Note:
This was experienced by people / couples who each weigh between 65 - 80 kg.
Koala Mattress Hot
It has also been noted that customers get quite hot and experience a fairly warm sleep on the Koala mattress.
Minimal Edge Support
Customers have noticed that it’s quite hard to get out of bed/ sit on the edge of the mattress as the edges are quite soft and there is minimal edge support. If you’re someone who requires a firmer level of support, you’d most likely need to go for something else.
With this mind, the Koala mattress is not recommended for longevity.

Ecosa Mattress
Rated as one of Australia’s best mattress in a box, if you’re looking for a firmer mattress of higher quality, then the Ecosa mattress is a very strong contender to the Koala mattress.

But here’s the kicker:
Unlike Koala, Ecosa’s BAU sale is $200 off, which you can claim right now.
So not only is it of higher quality:
But you’re looking to save $149 or so if you we’re to go with an Ecosa mattress instead.
Ergoflex Mattress
If you’re looking for a similar alternative to the Koala mattress.
The Ergoflex mattress is a stand out.
Recommended by Australia’s back Dr, Mark Craig.
It’s a mattress to consider if you’re suffering from back pain.
Comprising of 3 layers and a protective inner cover, it will provide a more supportive sleep than the Koala mattress.
If longevity is a concern for you, the bottom layer of the Ergoflex mattress is a supportive impact resistant durable 9cm layer of high resilience foam.
The mattresses foundation ensures its longevity.
Compared to the Koala mattress, there is a saving of up to $150 if you’re looking at the Ergoflex single or king single mattress.
Otherwise the prices for the other mattress sizes are fairly similar.

Koala Mattress Review In Summary
There you have it, our definitive Koala mattress review for 2021.
With everything considered, would we recommend the Koala mattress?
Not for everyday use.
We wouldn’t recommend the mattress as the mattress you’d sleep on daily, as we can’t say with confidence that it’ll last much longer than 6 - 12 months.
However:
If you had a guest bedroom, the Koala mattress could be one to consider for it.
On average if you have guests that sleep over a few times a year, the Koala mattress may be quite a good option, as customers who’ve been using their Koala mattress for a short period, tend to enjoy sleeping on it.
Some quick math to put it into perspective:
If we said the Koala mattress had a life of 6 months and your guests slept over for 2 weeks every year, the mattress would last over 10 years.
